Ski Mountaineering and Alpine Cross-Country
In the ski-touring community, Lungau is definitely one of the hottest tips. From Zederhaus in Riedingtal, which is famous for its alpine and high-alpine touring opportunities, to the Preber outside of Tamsweg and the Nockberge mountains, located in the “3-Province Area” of Salzburg-Carinthia-Styria, where the gentler mountainsides of the “Nockberge” offer somewhat easier touring conditions.
Cross-country skiers love to head for those alpine trails in the Lungau.The Lignitztal Cross-Country Center, close to the Fanningberg, is a very beautiful trail network with lighting and snowmaking equipment whenever needed. The Lignitztal Cross-Country Center also offers another exciting highlight: a laser biathlon range.
Sleigh Rides and “Ice Stock Sport”
A horse-drawn sleigh is the most romantic way imaginable to explore the Lungau valleys. But if you would prefer to jump onto a saddle instead, you have a small selection of riding stables to choose from as well.

So called “Krampus parades” and idyllic Advent markets, festive brass music and choral music: Advent and the Christmas season in Lungau are a very peaceful, reflective time of the year. Church traditions and folk customs are still an essential part of community life, extending far beyond the arrival of the New Year and well into January. Visit the Silent Night Village of Mariapfarr, with its renovated pilgrimage church, the “Silent Night Museum” and “Josef Mohr Square” with its fountain – a thought-provoking journey into the past, to the time when assistant priest Josef Mohr sat down in his room at the parsonage in Mariapfarr and penned the words to the most famous Christmas song in the world: “Silent Night Holy Night”.
