Vacation with dog at the chalet village Fanningberg
ANIMAL good time out in Salzburg’s Lungau
What could be nicer than a vacation with dog? Sniffing the mountain air with your fur nose and spending time intensely? Dogs love to be outdoors with their owners and to explore new things. Away from the well-known walking paths and the daily dog walks, exciting experiences await on holiday in Salzburg’s Lungau, which give new impulses to the human-dog relationship.
In the chalet village of Fanningberg, dogs are not only tolerated, but are warmly welcomed. Our own two four-legged friends, the St. Bernard mongrel “César” and the herd dog “Aika”, are particularly happy to welcome visitors. We know that a dog belongs to the family and that you don’t want to miss your loyal companion, even on vacation.
Accommodation with a “woof” factor
Our charming chalet village Fanningberg is located at 1,500 m above sea level, right next to the ski slope and offers a luxurious retreat in nature in summer and winter. Here your dog can give free rein to his urge to move and let off steam as he pleases. Our luxury chalets not only offer more space than a hotel or guesthouse, but also more personal freedom. Whether at dinner together, at a social get-together or while relaxing on the sofa – your fur nose is always with you. If you are looking for a vacation with your dog in Austria, then you have come to the right place!
Of course, there are also a number of activities in the UNESCO Biosphere Park Salzburg Lungau that allow you to grow even closer with your four-legged friend
Vacation with your dog in winter
Dogs love snow! When it has snowed properly, you can’t stop because of the enthusiasm: you frolic on freshly snow-covered paths and meadows, enthusiastically chasing snowballs or eagerly digging holes. This irrepressible joie de vivre is wonderfully contagious and wants to be shared with mum and dad.
During winter hikes together there is a lot to explore under the white blanket and dogs that like to sniff can train their nose very well: Snow affects the smell, which makes nose work more challenging and exciting for the dog. The winter hiking network in Austria’s sunniest region stretches for almost 195 km at various altitudes and offers pure variety. The cleared paths lead along streams, through snow-covered forests and meadows and your dog can explore the untouched surroundings.
If you and your darling would like to experience a special adventure, a gondola ride in the Großeck-Speiereck ski area is recommended. With the “Sonnenbahn” in St. Martin or the “Großeckbahn” in Mauterndorf you and your four-legged friend can get to the mountain station at around 2,000m in no time and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains of the Lungau. The so-called “Sonnenhangweg” is 2.5 km long and offers a varied hike above the tree line.
Great fun in the snow
If you want to physically challenge your fur nose more, snowshoe hikes or ski tours, where there is the longest run, are very suitable. On the Fanningberg there is a multitude of ski tour and snowshoe routes available to you and your dog right outside the front door. Here you can trudge through beautiful snow-covered forests and meadows in deep snow and your four-legged friend can let off steam to their heart’s content.
Your dog will be happy like a snow king when it comes to activities such as sledding and cross-country skiing.
Cross-country skiing in particular is an ideal winter sport for dogs, as they can run alongside at a relaxed pace. Around 150 km of cross-country and skating trails are available in the Salzburg Lungau Biosphere Park. In Weißpriach, one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Lungau, the cross-country ski trail leads along the “Longa” stream to the popular Dicktlerhütte. Here you and your four-legged friend can take a break in a cozy atmosphere and fortify yourself with a hearty snack or homemade apple strudel.
The Lignitz cross-country ski run in Mariapfarr and the well-known high-altitude cross-country ski runs on the Prebersee and in Schönfeld are in close proximity to the community of Weißpriach.
Not only in winter your dog can really let off steam in the chalet village of Fanningberg – your four-legged friend will also get their money’s worth here in summer: shady forests, extensive alpine meadows, refreshing mountain streams and mountain lakes offer a welcome cooling for you and your darling on hot summer days.
Vacation with dog in Summer
In the immediate vicinity of the chalet village Fanningbergswarten promising summit experiences for you and your dog. The summits of the Fanninghöhe and the Zehnerriegel, both at 2,115 m, can be climbed in an hour and a half and offer a wonderful mountain panorama. There are plenty of smaller water sources along the way for your dog to drink. On the way back, it is worth stopping at the cozy Zirmbar and being pampered with specialties from the region.
It doesn’t always have to be the summit hike when you are out and about in the mountains; a forest walk on the Fanningberg can also be a real experience for dog and person. Tall grass, leaves or stacked wood have an intense smell of their own and can be used wonderfully as a sniffing course.
Yout dog loves water?
Then a tour to the Weißpriach Valley is worthwhile. In 2015, the Weißpriach Valley was voted the most beautiful place in Salzburg in the ORF tv program “9 Places 9 Treasures”. You can hike on a gravel road from Hinterweißpriach along the mountain stream “Longa” to the rustic hut Granglerhütte. During a break, you can fortify yourself with hearty home-style cooking such as “Kasnock’n” or cheese dumpling soup from regional production, while your darling can cool off in the calmly flowing, shallow “Longa”. You can then hike on a shady forest path to the “Toni-Mörtel-Hütte” and the mountain lake Wirpitschsee at 1,700 m. Here your darling can cool down wonderfully and in midsummer maybe even jump into the cool water with you!
Please note that you need a pet passport for your dog within the European Union. In addition, your dog must be chipped for a trip in the EU in order to enable unambiguous identification. Further entry requirements for dogs in Austria can be found here.
We are happy to answer any questions you may have about excursion destinations with your four-legged friend. Our two loyal four-legged house owners “César” and “Aika” are already looking forward to an animal visit!
